Gallery > Still Life Like the flower, the still life has a long tradition in painting. I look at the still life as a way of exploring my artistic interests – color, transparency, light, shape and space. I am able to experiment with space, a high horizon line, a low horizon line or no horizon line. I am able to place the area of focus in a non-traditional position on the painting ground. Light can be controlled; it can be placed above the subject, it can be placed lower than the subject, it can be placed to the side or from the back of the subject. Shadows can be created by the light placement – close or further away, falling over the subject or joining objects within a composition. The light can be a tool to improve the composition and this can be achieved easily with the still life. Color can be used in unusual ways – cool in front and warm in the back, dark in the foreground and light in the background. I experiment with color in my still life paintings and what I find can be applied to other subject matter. |
