Gallery > Human Element

At university, my art courses in drawing and painting media involved the nude. To this day, I continue to study the human form. I meet weekly with a group of artists to draw the nude a professional model. I spend three hours observing and studying the male or female form. Color, shape and space are considerations in this weekly exercise.

My sketches are drawn in soft pencils. Each drawing is portrayed in full value to create the volume of the form. I will be able to use these drawings as a reference for a painting; the values will give me a clue to the colors to use. The models take thirteen different poses each week. Each pose is a different overall shape. These shapes will each occupy space in a different way curled into a ball, stretching out to the limit, and every movement in between. The relationship between the shape and the space in which it exists teaches valuable lessons about space that can be applied to other subject matter. The human form is a wonderful teaching tool.
