Gallery > Abstracts

I was not ready to think about abstraction let alone paint an abstract work until I had studied and understood design. I did not know where to start. Before I start any painting, I analyze the space, make a decision on the placement of the focal area, choose a dominant value and think about my color selection.

The abstracts are painted on hot press paper or Yupo paper in liquid acrylics. The paint reacts differently on each of these surfaces. With the hot press paper, I can create spontaneous white lines with masking fluid. To achieve the whites on Yupo, I wipe off the color with alcohol. On both surfaces, there is some technical exploration with the acrylics.

My love of color and transparency continues in the abstract works. As in watercolor, the light-value colors are applied first. To continue I adapt watercolor techniques. In many of the abstracts, the picture plane is divided into small windowpanes a view into my world of imagination.
