Tip of the month – November 2004

Continuing with my examination of the 12 Color Wheel (Holbein 12 Color Wheel , Itten Color Star), I will look at some of the other information that the wheels contain.

Holbein Color Wheel

In the center of the above color wheel, you will notice 1) a straight line, 2) an isosceles triangle, 3) an equilateral triangle, 4) and a rectangle.

These are visuals of a pair of complements (yellow/purple) as seen on each of the color wheels. Both of these wheels have a moveable top which can be repositioned to show another pair of complements.

2nd. complementary pair

You can choose a split complementary selection on both of these wheels.

In this instance, the points
of the triangle are indicating
yellow, red-violet, and blue-violet.

On this wheel, the split complementary
chosen has been isolated from the
remaining 9 colors.

You can see that a split complementary palette consists of 3 colors – a complementary pair in which one of the colors in the pair is dropped and two neighbors (one from each side of the dropped color) replace the eliminated color. Each 12 Color Wheel contains 12 different split complementary choices.

Primary Triad

Primary Triad

The Triad takes the form of an equilateral triangle. On the 12 Color Wheel, there are 4 possible choices, 1) yellow, red, blue, 2) orange, violet, green, 3) yellow/orange, red/violet, blue/green, 4) red/orange, blue/violet, yellow/green.

The 4th palette selection that can be seen on the 12 Color Wheel is called the Tetrad. It is a four color palette selection.

Rectangular Tetrad
The corner points of the rectangle
can be moved to select 6 different
selections.

Rectangular Tetrad
The black disc on the Itten Wheel
can be moved to isolate the same 6.

The split complementary, the triad, and the tetrad color palettes present 22 limited palette selections on the 12 Color Wheel. The 12 Color Wheel helps you with your color choices and makes your selection visible for you.
