Tip of the Month - November 2002

This month's tip is another variation of the TETRAD from last month's tip. If you look at the color wheel from October's tip, it will help you to see the change of colors. The cool yellow (aureolin) has changed to YELLOW-ORANGE and each of the other colors has moved over one to the left resulting in PERMANENT ROSE, ULTRAMARINE BLUE, & WINSOR GREEN as the replacement colors.

Upon looking at these 2 complementary pairs, a decision should be made about the dominant temperature of the painting. The TETRAD is evenly divided into warm/cool colors. I paint small abstracts to discover the color mixes. The visuals below show the cool abstract and a simple landscape with a cool dominance.

The next set of visuals have a warm dominance.

When using a TETRAD, choose a temperature dominance. Remember to put a little warm in the cool dominance and to put a little cool in the warm dominance.
