Tip of the Month - April 2003

In reality, a painting is a collection of shapes of varying sizes and values. Some of the shapes, within a work, are considered more important in the mind of the artist.

There are many ways to show your choice of the important shapes. One of which is the placement of the important shapes on the picture plane. Shapes placed on the edge of the painting format attract attention to that edge. By a little pre-planning, attention can be drawn to the inside of the painting format.

The final work was also, painted on site. Placement of the subject on the picture plane was of the utmost importance. This chapel had been the subject of numerous paintings. After several sketches to decide placement, I decided to present the subject on the upper third of the picture plane.

Run an imaginary diagonal line from corner to corner and add the perpendicular line to one of the remaining corners.
