Tip of the Month March 2004

The next three colors on my 12 color wheel are VERMILION (Holbein), CADMIUM RED, and PERMANENT ROSE.

I do add other REDS or substitute other REDS from time to time. As an example:

cadmium red light   cadmium scarlet   vermilion

Winsor red   cadmium red deep(Holbein)   cadmium red

alizarin crimson   rose madder genuine   permanent rose

In these examples, the first two colors are the colors that are exchanged for the third color.

When I first started looking at the RED hue - MARCH 2001: TIP PAGE-, I became more aware of the differences in the REDS available on the market place. Those differences became important in my choices for trying to achieve certain colors which have RED in the mix.

Later, I used those differences in my paintings: in CANNA, I have used passages of warm RED (containing yellow) and cool RED (containing blue): ENIGMA IN RED is a work about the color RED: REDS have been used in AFTERGLOW in warm and cool temperatures to express light and shade.

By continuing to create color visuals, as I suggested last month, you will learn more about the sometimes subtle and important differences in the color RED.

Below you will see a few examples of these differences. Each color to the left has been mixed with the three reds.

Winsor green    vermilion   cadmium red   permanent rose

ultramarine blue   vermilion   cadmium red   permanent rose

sap green   vermilion   cadmium red   permanent rose
