Summer's Flower

There is something about the sunflower that makes me think of summer. I know that when we plant them in the garden, they will be in bloom at the end of August into September. I know that I wait expectantly for the first sign that the seeds have taken and then I wait to see the first signs of the flowers to come. The flower is a flat and spiky disc in the beginning. Gradually, the yellow peeks through all of the greenery and then one day, the bloom is there in all its glory waiting for the birds to come and feast on its seeds. Soon the beautiful dried flower on the decaying stem will be a forerunner of the color of autumn.
