Last Blooms

We decided to plant a few sunflowers in the garden this year, They are such wonderful flowers to see in a group. They grew to four feet and the blooms looked for the sun each day. As September approached, the flower heads became heavier and more mature. They turned downward as they usually do. The stems were thick and strong. What happened next was the expected. The squirrels found a new feeding station. It was not unusual to go into the yard and see one of them perched on top of a sunflower chomping away at the seeds and allowing many seeds to fall to the ground. Perhaps next year, I will not have to plant seeds.
