Red Canna

This painting represents my continuing love affair with red. The canna comes in many sizes and colors. The forms are similar in each of the types.

This particular canna gave me the opportunity to use a very wide selection of reds - warm to cool. When working with red, I often use an under wash of various yellows. This gives the warm reds a glow. As I painted the petals, I carried the many reds into the negative space. To refine the shapes I returned into the negative space with a cool red and a deep purple in a wet in wet technique. My technical approach for this painting was like that of watercolor, thin transparent washes.
