Autumn Beauties

Every autumn, I purchase gourds & squash at the farmer's market. They are intended for my students' still life paintings. This year, I arranged the gourds with the old barrel under a single warm light in my studio. I turned out the remaining lights & the resulting chiaroscuro image was striking. I chose alizarin crimson & sap green as my dominant colors. Quinacridone gold, quinacridone coral, Winsor blue, & Winsor violet were the remaining colors that I used. Layers & layers of color were required for the strong darks. Gourds are very much an icon of autumn.
